This 8 day / 7 night tour begins and ends in Perth, exploring some of the best birding locations in south-west Western Australia.

The route includes the Perth Hills, Margaret River, Cape Leeuwin, Cheynes Beach and the Stirling Range, with opportunities for black-cockatoos, parrots, fairy-wrens, honeyeaters, scrub-birds and other highly sought-after south-west species.

Tour itinerary

South West Western Australia itinerary

An 8 day / 7 night birding and photography tour beginning and ending in Perth, visiting the Perth Hills, Margaret River, Cheynes Beach and the Stirling Range.

Trip begins

Perth, Western Australia

Arrive into Perth before the tour begins. Flights arriving into Perth are not included.

Day 1

Perth Hills

Explore the Perth Hills for Red-capped Parrot, Red-eared Firetail, White-breasted Robin, Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo, Red-winged Fairy-wren, Western Spinebill and possibly Splendid Fairy-wren.

Days 2-3

Margaret River and Cape Leeuwin

Travel south to Margaret River for two nights. Birding sites include Cape Leeuwin, with chances for Rock Parrot, Southern Emu-wren, Baudin’s Black-Cockatoo, Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo, Australian Ringneck, Red-capped Parrot and Western Rosella.

Days 4-5

Cheynes Beach

Head east to Cheynes Beach, one of the best areas for Noisy Scrub-bird, Western Whipbird and Western Bristlebird. Other possible birds include Red-eared Firetail, Southern Emu-wren, White-breasted Robin, Western Rosella and Western Thornbill.

Days 6-7

Stirling Range

Travel to Stirling Range Retreat and spend time birding around the retreat and national park for Purple-crowned Lorikeet, Western Fieldwren, Western Wattlebird, Western Shrike-tit, Blue-breasted Fairy-wren, Western Gerygone, Scarlet Robin and Rufous Treecreeper.

Day 8

Return to Perth

Spend the final morning around the Stirling Range following up any missed birds before travelling back toward Perth, where the tour concludes.
