Rainforest, woodland and mangrove birding around Iron Range.

This tour begins in Cairns before flying to Lockhart River for a week exploring Iron Range National Park, Lockhart River and Portland.

The region offers a remarkable mix of habitats, from Iron Range rainforest to dry woodland, mangroves and coastal areas. These habitats hold some of Cape York’s most sought-after birds, including Palm Cockatoo, Magnificent Riflebird, Yellow-billed Kingfisher, monarchs, honeyeaters, White-faced Robin and Papuan Pitta on summer tours.

Evenings are based around Portland House, with the option of spotlighting for Green Tree Python, frogmouths and other nocturnal wildlife.

Iron Range National Park itinerary

A Cape York birding and photography tour beginning and ending in Cairns, exploring Iron Range National Park, Lockhart River and Portland.

Trip begins

Cairns, QLD

Guests need to arrive in Cairns the day before the tour. Flights to and from Cairns are not included.

Day 1

Cairns to Lockhart River

Fly from Cairns to Lockhart River, collect the 4WD and begin exploring Iron Range National Park, Lockhart River and Portland. Dinner is at Portland House, with optional spotlighting for Green Tree Python and nocturnal wildlife.

Days 2-6

Iron Range birding

Each day is planned around weather, bird activity and target species. Habitats include rainforest, dry woodland, mangroves and coastal areas around Iron Range, Lockhart River and Portland.

Day 7

Final birding and return

Depending on flight times, spend most of the day following up remaining bird or photography targets before flying from Lockhart River back to Cairns.

Trip ends

Cairns, QLD

The tour finishes back in Cairns after the return flight from Lockhart River.

Accommodation during the tour is at Portland House. Meals included: Day 1 lunch and dinner, Days 2-6 breakfast, lunch and dinner, Day 7 breakfast and lunch.

Palm Cockatoo, Eclectus Parrot, Red-cheeked Parrot, Chestnut-breasted Cuckoo, Yellow-billed Kingfisher, Buff-breasted Paradise-Kingfisher, Papuan Pitta, Black-eared Catbird, Fawn-breasted Bowerbird, Tropical Scrubwren, Green-backed Honeyeater, White-streaked Honeyeater, Tawny-breasted Honeyeater, Black-winged Monarch, Frill-necked Monarch, Trumpet Manucode, Magnificent Riflebird, Yellow-legged Flycatcher, White-faced Robin and Northern Scrub-robin.

Papuan Pitta and Black-winged Monarch are usually only possible on December to January tours.
