Tasmanian Endemic Tour itinerary

A 7 day / 6 night birding and photography tour beginning in Hobart, visiting Hobart reserves, Melaleuca and Bruny Island.

Trip begins

Hobart, Tasmania

Arrive into Hobart. Depending on arrival time, there may be time for some first birding around the city.

Day 1

Hobart reserves

Explore reserves around Hobart including Mount Wellington, Peter Murrell Reserve, Truganini Reserve and Goulds Lagoon, searching for Tasmanian specialties and waterbirds.

Days 2-3

Melaleuca and Hobart birding

Weather permitting, take an early flight to Melaleuca, the breeding area for the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrot. Other possible birds include Beautiful Firetail, Eastern Ground Parrot and Southern Emu-wren.

Day 4

Hobart to Bruny Island

Spend the morning following up species around Hobart before travelling south to Bruny Island, one of the best places to see and photograph Tasmania’s endemic birds.

Days 5-6

Bruny Island

Explore Bruny Island for species such as Forty-spotted Pardalote, Swift Parrot, Blue-winged Parrot, Beautiful Firetail, Black-faced Cormorant, robins, honeyeaters and coastal birds.

Day 7

Final Bruny Island birding

The final morning is spent birding around Bruny Island, depending on flight times and remaining target species.
