This 15 day / 14 night tour begins in Perth and finishes in Adelaide, crossing some of southern Australia’s most exciting birding country.

The route includes Margaret River, Cheynes Beach, Stirling Range National Park, Norseman, Madura, the Nullarbor Roadhouse, Ceduna, Port Lincoln and Port Augusta.

Tour itinerary

Perth to Adelaide across the Nullarbor itinerary

A 15 day / 14 night birding and photography tour beginning in Perth and finishing in Adelaide, crossing south-west Western Australia, the Nullarbor and the Eyre Peninsula.

Trip begins

Perth, Western Australia

Arrival into Perth before travelling south to Margaret River, the base for the first two nights.

Days 1-2

Margaret River and Cape Leeuwin

Explore the Margaret River region and Cape Leeuwin for Rock Parrot, Southern Emu-wren, Baudin’s Black-Cockatoo, Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo, Australian Ringneck, Red-capped Parrot and possibly Western Rosella.

Days 3-4

Cheynes Beach

Travel east to Cheynes Beach for Noisy Scrub-bird, Western Whipbird and Western Bristlebird. Other possible birds include Red-eared Firetail, Southern Emu-wren, Carnaby’s Black-Cockatoo, White-breasted Robin, Western Spinebill and Western Thornbill.

Days 5-6

Stirling Range

Explore Stirling Range National Park and nearby reserves for Purple-crowned Lorikeet, Gilbert’s Whistler, Western Rosella, Western Wattlebird, Tawny-crowned Honeyeater, Brush Bronzewing, Western Shrike-tit, Blue-breasted Fairy-wren and Rufous Treecreeper.

Day 7

Stirling Range to Norseman

Head toward Norseman, visiting reserves for Purple-gaped Honeyeater, Shy Heathwren and possible Malleefowl. Afternoon birding around Brooms Dam may produce White-eared Honeyeater, Copper-backed Quail-thrush, Redthroat and Blue-breasted Fairy-wren.

Day 8

Norseman to Madura

Morning birding east of Norseman for Copper-backed Quail-thrush, Rufous Treecreeper, Redthroat and, with luck, Scarlet-chested Parrot. Continue east to Madura Roadhouse, with the first chance for Pink Cockatoo.

Day 9

Madura to Nullarbor Roadhouse

Search around Madura for Pink Cockatoo before travelling east to the Nullarbor Roadhouse. Afternoon targets include Naretha Bluebonnet, Mulga Parrot and Rufous Fieldwren.

Day 10

Nullarbor to Ceduna

Search for Nullarbor Quail-thrush, Rufous Fieldwren and Southern Whiteface before continuing east toward Ceduna. Afternoon birding may include Yumbarra Conservation Park for Pink Cockatoo and mallee birds.

Days 11-13

Eyre Peninsula and Port Lincoln

Travel south to the Eyre Peninsula for Rock Parrot, Southern Emu-wren, Shy Heathwren, Southern Scrub-robin, Purple-gaped Honeyeater and White-bellied Whipbird. Spend two full days exploring reserves around Port Lincoln.

Day 14

Port Lincoln to Port Augusta

Final morning around Port Lincoln before travelling north to Port Augusta. If time allows, visit the Arid Lands for Redthroat, Elegant Parrot, White-fronted Chat, Rufous Fieldwren, Chirruping Wedgebill and honeyeaters.

Day 15

Port Augusta to Adelaide

Departure day from Adelaide. The day depends on flight time, with the drive from Port Augusta to Adelaide taking around three and a half hours.

Trip ends

Adelaide, South Australia

The tour finishes in Adelaide. Flights departing Adelaide are not included.
